A couple of weeks ago my husband and I went on a tree planting trip with Los Angeles-based Tree People. We had a wonderful time, and Tree People really have their act together. We had hard hats, gloves, hoes, shovels, and Coulter Pine saplings to plant. All we really needed was our own food, water, and gumption. We had all three!

It is always good to take part in earth-friendly activities, but the real reason we were there was because we recently suffered a devastating forest fire that destroyed more than 161,000 acres. My husband and I enjoyed the National Forest regularly, and when the fire occurred, we knew we were losing something very special, and a privilege of living where we do.

Despite the bare trees, ashen soil, and invasive weeds, it is still a breathtaking place. The calmness and clean air is better than a day at the spa. An added bonus; nobody but other volunteers were around. Due to the road closures, visitors are prohibited because of danger concerns. We were the only visitors allowed to enjoy the area, and help plant new life. We even named some of our trees! We hope that our children will enjoy the forest 30 years from now, as we have our entire lives. That’s the idea!
